Tom Platero is appointed as
the first Division Director for Navajo Division of Transportation. Tom was born and raised on the Navajo
Nation. His clans are Tachii’ nii (Red Running into the Water) born for To
baazhni’ azhi (Two Who Came to Water). Since joining Transportation, he has
worked to expand transportation services for the Navajo People. A primary initiative of his has been to
merge today’s technological advancements while respecting Tribal
traditions. It is a daunting task at
times, given the Native community’s respect for Mother Earth. Road development typically involves
disturbance of many natural elements.
As he looks to the future of Navajo DOT, Tom is making a commitment to
provide accountability and transparency in the provision of services.

Mr. Barney joined the Division of
Transportation as a Programs & Projects Specialist in 2006. He is
originally from Tohatchi, New Mexico and is Ashii’ (salt), born for
Tlogi’(hairy ones). His background, experience and managerial knowledge in
the Transportation Industry is an asset to the Division as he has worked for
various transportation departments within the Navajo Nation Government. As a Programs & Projects Specialist,
he managed and completed some road projects funded by the Navajo Nation, Fuel
Excise Tax by collaborating with Chapters, Contractors, Internal sections of
the Division and departments within the NN, Government. Based on his work
ethics and leadership, he was promoted to a Program Manager for the
Division’s Roads Department in 2009. This department is encouraging
partnerships and teamwork with all entities in maintaining the public roads
on the Navajo Nation.

Mr. Riley Wilson has been with the
Navajo Division of Transportation for over three years and in his present
position for over one year. He resides in Crystal, NM. His
background is in accounting with an emphasis on trust accounting. Riley
has bachelor’s degrees in Finance and General Management from the University
of New Mexico-Main Campus and is pursuing an MBA in Accounting. He
returned to the Navajo reservation to care for his family and feels this job
is an ideal opportunity to share his knowledge and experience with the Navajo
people.

Ermalinda Gene, a graduate of Northern Arizona
University, brings 17 years of transportation experience to the Navajo
Division of Transportation from the Arizona Department of Transportation.
Ms. Gene began her career in the Road Maintenance
Section and worked her way through the materials, construction and partnering
sections, eventually becoming a Contract Compliance Manager.
Throughout her career she has always advocated on
behalf of Tribes. She and the ADOT partnering office established the
Arizona Tribal Strategic Partnering Team along with various partnerships and
task teams that are vital to addressing current transportation issues.
In addition, she has facilitated many stakeholder partnerships important to
the development, maintenance and future needs of the Nation’s transportation
needs. Currently certified as a mediator to resolve differing
points of view, Ms. Gene has utilized the partnering concept to assist
stakeholders in achieving their goals and manage transportation processes.
